Are We Any Wiser?

This is a question I’ve been wrestling through as I read Steven Garber’s Visions of Vocation. With what we know, what will we do?

The question of, “are we any wiser” comes from a place of honest evaluation of ourselves and our culture. We already know that we don’t always follow the strict guidelines of what we know - just think about how the medical and educational industries demonstrate this:

In medicine - through ver rigorous testing - we know that sleep is of utmost importance. Yet who are some of our most sleep deprived people? Medical students!

Through similar rigorous methods in scientific testing, we know that not all children learn best at the same rates, at the same times of day, in the same ways, and in the same processes. And yet, we still pump students through the school system as if they all learned in the exact same way, at the exact same rate, and at the exact same time of day.

So… with the whole of human history and experience behind us… are we any wiser?
